Leading-edge boomers jazzed about retirement

December 30, 2007

By Jennifer Harper - Consider these assorted luminaries: President Bush, first lady Laura Bush, former President Bill Clinton, Cher, Diane Keaton, Dolly Parton, Linda Ronstadt, Liza Minnelli, Reggie Jackson, Sally Field, Sylvester Stallone, Donald Trump, Suzanne Somers , Susan Sarandon and Jimmy Buffett.

Their common link? Each was born in 1946, representing the wave of almost 3 million baby boomers who will sweep toward the age of retirement next year with optimism — and a surprising penchant for conservatism.

"Contrary to what most of us have believed about the baby boomers who came of age in the turbulent 1960s, the group is very much like the ‘Silent Generation’ that preceded them," said Sandra Timmermann, director of the MetLife Mature Market Institute, which recently released a study about the age group.

Freewheeling hippie freaks they’re not.

"Despite the social and political turbulence of their youth, these leading-edge boomers have established very traditional lifestyle characteristics. They were married once, had two children and feel they’ve done a decent job of caring for their family, their community and themselves," Ms. Timmermann said. "They really are more like Ward and June Cleaver, and they might be classified as conventional."

Only 2 percent attended the 1969 Woodstock Festival, the research found.

They’re still ready to rumble — or at least buzz a little: 77 percent said they are in good to excellent health. Their net worth — excluding home value — averages $257,800, and their annual income is about $71,400. They are mostly empty nesters: Fewer than one in five have children living with them. Eight percent live with grandchildren.

Eighty-three percent said they had done a good job rearing their family.

When asked to use one word to describe the benefits of being 62, the respondents were upbeat, reporting they were pleased to be close to retirement and valued being alive. They also valued their freedom, health, Social Security, wisdom and independence.

One person noted, "I’m glad to be on the planet, rather than in it."

Asked to describe the darker side of their age, the respondents typically said they were fearful of illness, disability, wrinkles, aches and pains, discrimination, under-appreciation, memory loss, mortality and generally getting older.

But when is that? In an era when 70 has been parlayed into "the new 50," this group is not too pushy. On average, "old" age begins around 78, the respondents said. Still, more than half have done little to ensure their "long-term care" needs have been addressed.

Politically, these first-wave boomers seem to be in touch with their Cleaver roots: 44 percent said they are conservative, while 22 percent classified themselves as liberal. Twenty percent said they were "more liberal when they were young" and have become more conservative since their 20s. Fifteen percent have become more liberal since then.

The group has passed beyond the demands of the so-called "Sandwich Generation," caught between caring for their own families and their aging parents. Only 5 percent have both parents still living; 27 percent have one parent. Eighty-seven percent said they were not looking after an older relative.

The survey of 1,000 adults who were age 61 in 2007 was conducted Nov. 1-30, with a margin of error of three percentage points.
